Without the Monarchy in place, who would you choose for President?

Recommended Posts

I don't know, Would it cost less then the Queen?

Yes he is still alive, about the same age as the Queen I think.

Surely not an American! Lets stick to British and preserve some form of patriotism. Even Bono and Bob Geldof, as experienced as they are at diplomatic relations ( are Irish) so they should be excluded.

Not sure how much the monarchy costs, however, presidents don't come cheap, if France is anything to go by:

Sean Penn was merely tongue in cheek :)

we could choose a president however we wanted, we could call the queen the president and pass the role down to her heirs, we could put the electoral role names into a hat and pick one out.

...

We could, but in reality we wouldn't, mainly because it wouldn't be sensible or truly democratic.

If this president is to replace the queen it doesn't need to be democratic we would just need someone with a good moral compass who does not have affinity for one party more than another-which is why the present system works well. We get people trained for the role from birth that don't have to take part in a big popularity contest which inevitably leads to people who lust for power winning the day.

Its the reason I don't see the point in an elected house of lords. Then we just get two houses filled with the same people squabbling-I don't see the point:confused:

Really? And you think that would ever swing in this country... Dictated to putting an unelected dictator on the spot...

In what way are you dictated to by our current monarchy system? We are not talking about having an american system here. A president could just be a figurehead as the queen is.

... or people from birth who have no concept of anything except luxury and privilege. Be very very aware; in the history of monarchy Elizabeth II and her father are extremely unique in actually being good at the job.

Something like Minority Report?

P.S. The book IS better by far! Dick is a legend in his foresight!

That was a problem when they were allowed to cut the heads off whoever they chose but they don't have that power anymore.

The Monarch doesn't dictate, but they do have the power to do so.

But by very definition of the word a presidents role is different to that of a Monarch...
