If a new part time employee starts work at these places... who's never worked in one of these places before, hence needs training and supervision what do they get paid??

I think you're overcooking the amount of supervision these people get to build an argument.. it's been pointed out again and again it's not work shadowing, for the most part people are left unattended to get on with it.. I mean how much supervision does sweeping up need?

Of course they will get training and supervision but they are contracted to work at the company ongoing once that training is over. They will also be subject to disciplinary and/or dismissal in the event they do not perform their duties. They will also be expected to take on FULL responsibilies as per their duties once their initial training is completed.

A four week work placement person isnt.

I am not saying that a work placement person is going to be constantly work shadowing. Nor will they be watched over big brother style 24/7 but the point is that they will only be able to do a limited amount of work in a four weeks compared to a full time / part time contracted worker. Therefore it is not a proper job. They are not working fully compared to the other staff and they will no sooner be started than gone. That is clearly why shouldnt dont get paid like one.

How many more times. If they turn up they get their benefits. 120 hours of work experience for a long term unemployed is not going to harm them. Its an incentive that could lead to something good at the end of it. They dont need and dont deserve any form of additional compensaiton for doing a bloody short work placement.

their "compensation" is the opportunity of an improved work history and maybe even a job if they prove themselves. Anyone actually serious about jobseeking should be jumping at the chance.

Those actually whinging about it just make me angry. Nobody has a right to sit jobless month after month after months taking their dole cheque.

All incentives, kicks up the backside and if necessary theats are welcome IMO.

HMV are the latest company to quit workfare, just goes to show that the people can make a difference.:)

I feel it's a shame that all these companies that employ 1000s of people are being attacked, when the same effort could be put on the many companies who out-source work to India. If people boycotted or were made aware of them, then perhaps we could bring home more jobs for our unemployed, or put pressure on other firms to not do the same.

Perhaps another topic though.

Just announced on the BBC website that Boots have pulled out of the Work Programme, thats the real deal: full on free adult labour at the point of coercion and sanctions, this is very significant, others will follow, if the providers like A4E can't provide places for its 'clients' as they are now paid by results they will go bust...

'There are plenty of adults with learning disabilities, carers and guardians who do voluntary projects and work placements for nothing other than their benefits day in day out for the rest of their lives. Why do these people on workfare think they deserve extra. '

Actually the mandatory Community Programme will force such groups as people with learning difficulties to undertake such indentured free labour, some open ended with no limits..

happy now?

btw, if you think people are angry now about the work experience con, wait until they witness sick and disabled people forced into unsuitable work and making vast profits for the providers like Serco..

The Tories/Lib Dems were quite obviously lying when they stated repeatedly that the work experience scheme for 16-24 year olds was entirely voluntary - the letters sent out by the DWP prove otherwise.

The Tories/Lib Dems also stated that the sanction element (loss of all benefits) for those dropping out of the scheme after one week was 'vital', yet now it has gone.

The struggle against workfare continues...

These work placement people are very unlikely to lose their benefit for turning up late a few times or doing the work badly or not providing good service etc....etc... unlike say an employee? you know someone who is actually getting paid to take a responsiblity.

Workfare participants can lose ALL of their benefits just for turning up late to their place of unpaid work. If it is reported to the job centre, or a private workfare company such as A4e, they can sanction the workfare participant for uncooperative behaviour (arriving late). Attendance and timekeeping are very strictly controlled on workfare programmes.

As workfare people are not employed, they do not enjoy ANY employment protections, from health and safety to such things as unfair dismissal... unlike say an employee. They do not get verbal or written warnings. They have NO employment rights whatsoever.
