percy filth
Last Friday we were having a quiet drink in a pub. The landlady called last orders and one of our number rushed to the bar to get the last round. Everything was proceeding normally for the first 3 drinks, but then the landlady refused to serve pints. She made the excuse that folk wouldn't have time to finish pints before chucking out time and handed over half pints instead. Having done this she then said she wouldn't serve any more drinks as it had now gone past time. This left some folks with pints, some with halves, and several with no drink at all. It all seemed very odd. Has anyone come upon such actions before?
Isabelle
Obviously she wanted to get finished early/on time that night. I've worked in pubs, and its a pain when people buy loads of drinks at last orders and then spend ages finishing them. You have to wait until they've finished and only then can you finish cleaning up. And the number of people who don't hear last orders or time being called; twenty minutes after time and they still come, asking if you are still serving. Sometimes we refused to do multiple shots or cocktail jugs at last orders simply because it took too long.
Murphy Jnr
Last orders probably arrived specifically to entice people to buy one more drink but if they no longer wish to carry on the 'tradition' perhaps it should be introduced as a 'drink up what you have' bell. NorthernStar
Sounds like the bad old days, your lucky they didn't employ some hairy ass to stand over you to threaten to snatch it off you if you can't manage it down in one. It might be wise to avoid that pub in the future and give your custom to a more customer focussed establishment instead if that's their usual modus operandi, it could of course have been a one off if something was occurring behind the scenes - who knows.
