Kadogo
The other thing in France is try to keep plenty of fuel in the car. When you see a sign saying " last fuel for 100 kilometres" it can be worrying.
SiSiSi
I've also done it, but wouldn't again. Visiting different places on a daily basis was great but the hours spent sitting in a car were mind numbing.
Jim Graham
I used to live in Germany and took my lot all over Europe. Try and make it fun for the kids by stopping off at child friendly places. Apart from the obvious Disneyland Paris try Legoland near Augsburg, Tripsdrill, Cologne chocolate factory. Great zoos in Berlin, Cologne and Stuttgart. The Alps can be great for kids and the beaches along the south of France. Then there's a seaworld with killer whales and dolphins somewhere near Nice. When the kids were small we used to do the long distances overnight while they were asleep.
Shogun
We go to Spain regularly with the caravan, the French don't like you stopping on the side of the road and things with a caravan so it is best if you organize a few stops on the way we usually go from Dover by ferry its cheaper than the tunnel, we are in the caravan club so we get a big discount on ferry travel, last year we went with all the family 4 adults and 3 kids we put together for the diesel and the camp sites so it worked out OK, still a lot cheaper than a package holiday we are thinking of going to Portugal this year, watch out for the tolls on the French roads they are a bit of a ripoff, you can take the back roads they are free but some are a bit tight for caravans and motor-homes still nice to see the little French villages and things, you need to get all the legal things right first before you go the French police are real keen and will go to town on any foreign vehicles especially British, the right kind of vehicles insurance is most important they will impound your vehicle if you don't have the correct type of insurance cover, the Spanish don't give a monkeys what you do they just don't care at all as soon as you get over the border into Spain its like a different world and a lot cheaper as well, just don't stop anywhere dodgy, some of the campsites in Spain are fantastic and real cheap. Can a caravan really be considered a driving holiday? It should really be an obstruction holiday. No one considering themselves to be a motorist would tow a caravan would they? Guest sibon
Can a caravan really be considered a driving holiday? It should really be an obstruction holiday. No one considering themselves to be a motorist would tow a caravan would they? No. It is fine to drive a caravan on a French motorway. The French all observe pretty impeccable lane discipline, so overtaking is no problem. To the OP. Go for it. Driving around France, Italy and Spain is a pleasure. Don't go to Disneyland though:gag::gag:

I obviously took this to mean the left side, at that is the right side in this country. Can you imagine the explanation that took to the local police? (dont take this seriously btw, for gods sake)
Shogun
Driving left hand is a bit strange at first, it takes me about half an hour to get used to it,roundabouts are a bit scary you just cant help looking right but the traffic comes from the left at junctions, foreigners they all have to be different dont know why they cant drive on the proper side of the road like we do:)
Harleyman
My suggestion for a driving holiday. Rent a comfortable spacious SUV type vehicle with a DVD player aboard at the back for the kids to watch their movies and play games on
