What if.. GCSEs?

Recommended Posts

the year on year improvements are because the marking in criteria based rather than orm referenced - in norm referencing - which you are suggesting grade inflation / deflation is solely in the hands of the chief examiner and where s/he draws the line in terms of percentages or SD from the mean .

if you do not understand the difference between these systems then i would suggest that you are insufficiently informed to engage in meaningful debate on the subject, and should stick to reading the Heily Mail or Faily Express

Pupils would be entered for a Grade A*, Grade B, and Grade F . There would be three tiers Higher,Intermediate, Basic each tier would have a full grade range A*-F The pupils would be able set exams in different tier for different subjects.

see below:

Mathematics entry for an A or A* higher tier

Biology entry for an A or B Higher tier

Chemistry entry for a B Higher tier

Physics Entry for an A Higher tier

English Lit Entry for a C Higher tier or an A* Intermediate tier

English Entry for a C Higher tier or an A* Intermediate tier

History Entry for a C at Higher tier or an A* Intermediate tier

French Entry for Grade A* Intermediate tier

I see what you mean. The pupils would be entered for the grades by their teachers and schools. The pupils would not know what level or grade that they were entered for. I feel it makes since to have A*-F grades in all tiers.

So when a few years down the line you have two people, both claiming to have an A* in Mathematics, they wouldn't be able to tell you whether that was a top 5% result or a top 35% result?

There only be 15% of pupils that would be able A*'s 5% from each tier. There would be a way for the universities and employers would be able to get info about what tier ha been set by the person.

Thats irrelevant to employers though - if you're looking for an accountant, you don't want someone with an A* but who can't tell you whether they got that at the foundation level or the higher level. A* should mean A* in comparison to all others, not just a random selection of students. Someone getting an A* in the intermediate level according to your idea is in the top 35% of all people (A* at intermediate = A* + A + B grades at higher).

There would be a way for the universities and employers would be able to get info about what tier ha been set by the person.

Why shouldn't a pupil know what level they have been set? They'll work it out quickly enough when they get to the test if they're on the wrong one. I used to have a very stubborn science teacher who kept putting me in for the intermediate level module tests rather than higher. After three 100% results and an intervention by the head of department he decided to allow me to "attempt" the higher level paper.

Would employers have to keep the levels secret from interviewees under your plans?

I can't see a single benefit for your plans...

just have a 100 questions varying in difficulty, then give your score out of 100 instead of a grade.

Maths would set four papers each being 200 points the GCSEs would be worth 800 points.

Paper 1: Basic maths and basic Algebra

Paper 2: Algebra and Geometry

Paper 3: Trigonometryand and basic Calculus

Paper 4:Calculus, Vector calculus and Differential equations

Grades A*-U A* 95%-100%=190-200pts A 80%-94%=160-188pts B 70%-79%=158-140pts C 60%-69%=120-138pts D 50%-59%=100-118pts E 40%-49%=80-98pts F 30%-39%=60-78pts U 29%-less=0pts
