Bananas. Too much sugar?

Recommended Posts

I'm really confused! I started eating bananas as I thought really good for me, then I heard not so good. So got on google, (I'm a boring sod you see) and checked out bananas. Well just read they contain too much sugar.

Now I'm really confused I thought sugar was man-made, not something that grows in bananas (excuse the pun)

I'm becoming something of a health freak with my food but the more I read the more I become confused.

"Sugar" can mean one of two things; table sugar is the chemical compound known as sucrose. Sucrose, along with fructose, dextrose, lactose (in milk) and a vast number of other compounds ending in -ose, are the chemical group of molecules known as "sugars."

I highly doubt that bananas contain much sucrose, but they definitely will contain sugars of one form or another.

You do know that sugar is refined from sugar cane which grows naturally?

Well now I know, never gave it much thought. I was just shocked that certain web pages said bananas contain too much sugar.

It's not the same stuff as the refined sugar that you eat, but if you think about it the sweetness in the fruit has to come from somewhere. It's also worth knowing that bananas have potassium in them as well and if you eat loads in one go it is possible that you can give yourself a cardiac arrhythmia.

As long as you don't gorge of fruit you should be OK as they have a lot of good stuff in them, but it's vegetable that hold lots health benefits, that you should concentrate on building your diet around. Some like the cucumber is rumoured to hold less energy in them than it take takes to eat and digest.

Keep the fruit for treats like you used to with chocolate, sweets and cakes, or also when your feeling like an energy boost.

Is it the case that if you are diabetic, you should refrain from eating bananas, surely overall they are good for your health and cheap and nutritious?

Not according to Diabetes UK.

Q. Is it true that I shouldn’t eat bananas or grapes?

A. No. All fruit and vegetables are extremely good for you. Eating more can

reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, some cancers and some gut

problems. You should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables

per day.
