04.03.12 - Smithywood 4-1 Sheffield Forum - Fixture Now Void

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum fell to a disappointing defeat at Bradway Rec. More changes were made to the team when 4 players had to pull out just hours before the game so Tom Gray, Andy Coates and Nathan Jenkins were replaced by Kyle Dowling, Ashley Matthews and Joe Appleby. Just 3 subs available in the end although Matthew Corker was reluctant to play as he wasnt feeling 100%. He as joined by Kane Conway and Tom Hunter meaning 3 defenders on the bench.

The game kicked off this morning in the rain on an already heavy pitch with early play being end to end. Smithywood played more direct long ball whilst Forum got the ball down and played forward. Forum started to have the better of the play but failed to find the net. Smithywood then took the lead against the run of play. An effort was fired in from around 20 yards heading straight for Adam Smith in the Forum goal before Smithy forward got a touch on the ball, knocking to the other side of the goal.

Forum responded and pushed forward eventually equalising through Shane Middlebrook. Forum broke away with Dowling down the left who play the ball across the edge of the area to Philip Gill. He then played it just inside the area to his right for Middlebrook to hit home to the keepers far post.

Forum continued to apply pressure but again failed to take advantage. Dowling had probably the best chance but hit his close range effort high. Forum also had to make a first half substitution when left winger Ashley Proctor had to come off meaning Hunter came on for a straight swap. Forum also had problems with Ashley Matthews and Kyle Dowling in pain but playing on.

Half time: Smithywood 1-1 Sheffield Forum

Forum came out quickly for the 2nd half hoping to continue where they left off but it was Smithywood that eventually took the lead. A corner was met at the back post, headed back across goal then nodded home. Poor defending from Forum to allow 2 free headers around the 6 yard area.

Matthews then had a free header about 10 yards out but put the ball wide of goal. Matthews had to come off eventually meaning Conway had to take to the pitch meaning a reshuffle as he started right wing, Hunter went centre back and Gill left wing. Forum had attacking possession but again failed to find their finishing boots on this ocassion. Dowling, Middlebrook and Sheedy all off target.

Smithywood then somehow grabbed a third which was a carbon copy of the first goal. A long range effort heading straight for Smith was again clipped by another Smithy player sending it the opposite direction.

Corker did eventually make an appearance, coming on in a straight swap for striker Dowling.

Salt was well and truly rubbed into the wound when a poor effort went slowly through Smiths legs when the ball didnt bounce as expected in front of him. Smithy had been kept to long range efforts and long ball play and Shaun Baugh had a strong game at the back.

Credit to Forum, they kept on playing football despite the state of the pitch and on another day would have walked away with a well deserved and plenty of goals, just not on this occasion.

We have no league fixture next week so will possibly play a friendly before returning on 18th March to play FDL Totley on Whirlow Playing Fields.

---------------------This fixture is now void due to ineligible players fielded by the opposition. Game to be replayed.---------------------
