poppet2
I wonder if Cameron is going to start a program to urge all his corporate friends to 'hire a con'.
mafya
When you get released from jail you only get a weeks dole money off the prison yet it takes 2weeks plus to actually get something from the dole office so no wonder many end up re offending. As for trying to get a job with a criminal record, well thats another story.. Forcing prisoners onto work programmes is not the answer.
mafya
Trying to help former cons back into a normal life of work, where is the fault in that? Those other problems can and should be sorted out whilst they are in prison and should be seen as an enforced education or enforced rehab as much as a punishment. The fault is that that most of society believes ex offenders shouldn't be given jobs when non offenders are unemployed etc etc..
mafya
The perfect cv for picking dog-crap up. Dog crap should be picked up by the dogs owners.
NorthernStar
Social inequality is without doubt is a major contributor to the number of offenders in prisons, making slaves of newly released prisoners flies in the face of the known facts. Just another condem policy of trying to put out the fire with petroleum spirit.

But what is the answer, the work shy obviously don't want to work because they believe life is better as a criminal or on hand outs. Your point "As for trying to get a job with a criminal record", surely this bypasses that and helps them get a good reference after proving they are just as able as others. Sounds more than fair TBH. I agree that by having only a weeks money once they get out could lead to them taking the choice to commit crimes, but what's your solution, to give them more money, put them straight on to benefits, surely a steady job would be more helpful and kind? Surely a fully socialist society would be more oppressive and akin to slavery... we are all equal but some are more equal than others... humpf! If the work programme is work that the prisoner chooses to do then fair enough it could work but if they are forced ie making it a condition of the prisoners licence terms that they must do any work programme they are put on than there will be problems. Basically it's just a stretch of Community Service, but just with a little less onus and a lot more prospects. Personally, IF I ever was sent to prison, i'd like an opportunity to prove my worth rather than just be slung on a heap with a sign saying "unemployable because of criminal record".
