Gay marriage - 'shameful'?

Recommended Posts

Some people seem to forget that that society is nothing more than a collection of minorities. By looking after the rights of those minorities, you are strengthening our society as a whole.

Exactamundo.

I was listening to Beyond Belief on R4 on Monday, which was discussing the sectarian troubles in Nigeria, which seems intent on becoming the next Somalia.

Christans murdering Muslims, and Muslims murdering Christians. Lovely. In the areas where Muslims hold the majority, Sharia Law is being imposed on everybody. In one area where Muslims wanted to impose Sharia but couldn't since their majority wasn't big enough, the minority of Christians actually colluded with their 'enemy' to agree to ban alcohol, thus imposing their rules on the even smaller minority of secular citizens.

Advocating for gay marriage might seem trivial, but it is fundamental to a healthy secular society.

You do know that the dictionary isn't set in stone, words do change their meaning over time and definitions change. So it'll be really easy to sort out your little conundrum.

the word marriage has been around for 1000's of years!! between man & women! you can’t change history.. and you can’t change the church. marriage is for Man & Women, to become 1 and have children.... naturally

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it's only relatively recently that it became illegal for a husband to rape his wife. So the institution of marriage can change and move with the times, or was that not a change that you supported?

The word has been around longer than the church, so we can ignore that angle for a start.

Are you completely sure that it has always meant between man and woman? In some places it means between and man and women(plural)... There isn't a universal definition that was handed down from on high (no matter what some holy booksfairy tales might claim).

That's an entirely subjective statement. With which I completely disagree.

Legalising gay marriage is a moral and social step forward, embracing the quality that we'd like our society to be based on. It's all part of an accelerating process of liberalisation which leaves no place in society for those who would discriminate against others for any reason.

were have I heard that statement before?:suspect:

the chattering classes were making the same statements as that when the debate about legalising porn was raging a few years ago and look what that industry devoloped into

the very same luvvies that wanted it legalised then now want it banned,

because its morally degrading of women

But it's the thin end of the wedge and by making one form of sexual perversion acceptable you open a whole new can of worms.

What about other taboo forms of sexual behaviour such as incest, bestiality or paedophilia - should these activities be socially acceptable next. All the arguments in favour of gay marriage could just as easily apply to those?

Does your support for minorities also include support for a gay minority christian group who happen to believe in a holy book that covers 6000 years of history and has been referred to on the thread as a "book of fairy tales"

Our society has judged those examples given as being illegal and wrong for reasons that a school child can understand, and it accepts that homosexuality isn't even comparable, and as such marriage should reflect that.

Do you really believe that same sex marriages would then lead to incest, bestiality or pedophilia becoming more socially acceptable?
