They were made compulsory on 1st June 1935. It's fantastic that you've driven for so long without incurring any endorsements on your licence. Well done! aidy
Only had three since i passed my test in '96: Y reg old style Vauxhall Astra in horrendous Beige with Brown interior. This ended up getting stolen in Rotherham by scummy joyriders and was eventually found a few hundred miles away by police! My second car was a lovely old 998cc Mini (cant remember what reg) in Silver and Gold stripes on the bonnet and Gold roof. It also had extra rally style spotlights on the front and "Cherub" emblazoned on the back. I seem to recall it having a manual choke which you had to pull out when you first started the car and had to slowly push it back in for a few minutes! Great fun to drive. My final car was a P reg Peugeot 106 in Green. Drove it for over a decade with very few problems until it finally died on me last yr. Was a right work horse that car!
