Fri 13th April, The Monochrome Set @ The Greystones

Friday 13th April, The Greystones sees a very special gig from one of the most important and influential bands to emerge from the post punk scene in the late 70s.

The Monochrome Set was formed in 1978 by vocalist Ganesh ‘Bid’ Seshadri and guitarist Lester Square when art rock band The B-Sides split ( whose name-changing bassist Stuart Goddard formed Adam & The Ants).

With a whimsical pop sensibility, clever lyrics and an idiosyncratic, retrogressive guitar-led sound, they bridged the gap between freak beat and post punk and effectively paved the way for groups such as The Smiths. Influencing a whole family tree of bands from Orange Juice and Fire Engines to The Divine Comedy, Graham Coxon and Franz Ferdinand, The Monochrome Set are back, with original members Bid and Lester Square sounding as fresh and exciting as ever.

"How can anyone go through life without the dear, cuddly Monochrome Set?" – Morrissey

The Monochrome Set have kept a dogged bunch of fans amazed, amused and occasionally confused since their heady heydays of the late 70s/early 80s. Now they are back: cuddlier, deadlier and more acerbic than ever, with a brand new album (Platinum Coils) and the (almost) original lineup of Bid, Lester Square and Andy Warren joined by Jennifer “Drummy Girl” Dennito and Helena “Strings” Johansson.

The Monochrome Set played at CherryRed's 30th anniversary do in 2008 but didn't contemplate a permanent arrangement until Bid suffered a stroke in 2010. They played in 2011 to sold-out venues in the UK, Europe and Japan, and the new album “Platinum Coils” will available at the gig. Is 2012 the Year of the Monochrome Set? Can they still ‘entertain our tiny minds’?

Support from Sheffield's own Don't Sleep Dream.

Anyone get a set list? What was that song from 1985 - with the false ending?

This is the set list from Edinburgh:

The Monochrome Set

Lighter Side of Dating

Jet Set Junta

Alphaville

Hip Kitten Spinning Chrome

Waiting for Alberto

Streams

The Devil Rides Out

Fun for all the Family

B-I-D Spells Bid

I Can't Control My Feet

Cauchemar

The Ruling Class

Cast a Long Shadow

Cowboy Country

Jacob's Ladder

Eine Symphonie des Grauens

1st Encore

Goodbye Joe

He's Frank

Second Encore

They Call Me Silence

The Mating Game

The Greystones gig was similar, except the opening number was pushed to number three due to the late arrival of the drummer.

As for the 1985 song, my guess would be Cowboy Country.
