I1L2T3
It seems the "Omnishambles" continues, there has been another U Turn. "The government is on the brink of making two Budget U-turns. The so-called "pasty tax" and caravan tax are not being dropped but heavily amended. Most takeaway pasties and sausage rolls will not now have VAT levied on them as planned. Static caravans will now pay a new 5% VAT rate, instead of the planned 20%." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-18245005 What a complete waste of government energy. We're in the midst of the worst financial storm since 1929 and the government managed to create a crisis out of pasties and caravans. Couldn't make it up. For Thatcher it was the Poll Tax, for Blair it was war in Iraq, for Osborne.....a Greggs Pasty!

Mecky
It's all over the newspapers this morning about a so-called U-turn. It is not a U-Turn, the tax still applies. The tax still applies to food that is kept warm having come out of the oven. The government have realised it is an unpopular tax and want to be seen to be doing the right thing by getting rid of it. The government is trying to pander to public opinion but is pulling the wool over peoples' eyes.

Stamp duty on a swish second home in Cornwall - 1% VAT on a caravan in Skeggy - 5% Them Tories don't half know how to shoot themselves in the foot. This will come back to haunt them. quisquose
This story just goes to highlight what's wrong with our political system. We have the most complicated tax system possible. I dare say even taxman can't fathom it, and I know my chartered accounting qualification is impotent against the sheer mass of Tolley’s Yellow Tax Handbook. The tax system is in desperate need of simplification, and there was no reason why pasties and caravans should have special rules to exempt them and complicate the system, and it was sensible to remove those exemptions. A few weeks of political lobbying later and we now end up with even more complicated rules, and a system that's even more expensive to manage. It doesn't matter which side (like some football team) you support, it is our political system that is broke.

What would you like them to do, consult with you personally before they put forward any policies at all?

What would you like them to do, consult with you personally before they put forward any policies at all? Well said. I'd rather have a government that listens and makes changes based upon that rather than the old "do as we say" government like Labour who went ahead with ID cards and the Millennium Dome, despite the costs and unpopularity. Half the time the media is to blame. Remember this thread? David Cameron is examining the idea of tax breaks for people who hire cleaning or other household services, as a way of generating extra jobs and freeing more women so they can join the workforce. Speaking at a Nordic summit in Sweden, he said he was interested in its government's tax break that has been praised for reducing the hidden economy in cheap domestic labour. and the SF rabble instantly went into the usual fit of rage and acting like it was a done deal. You mean the Tories don't half know how to look after the super rich at the expense of everyone else. Pandering to them and lowering the higher rate of tax whilst they are cutting essential services is absolutely disgusting. It is totally immoral.
