New strategy on alcohol

Recommended Posts

Cigs up. Booze up. Sausage rolls up. We're all in this together.

As Kingsley Amis said:

'No pleasure is worth giving up for the sake of two more years in a geriatric home in Weston-super-Mare.'

Would it be worth giving up to see your kids go to secondary school or graduate from Uni, instead of dying of a massive heart attack when they're 7 years old?

Could you explain wht the streets of towns are full of drunks at kicking out time?

Because they drink at home to get topped up so that the rest of the night is cheaper. The stuff they drink at home is the high strength ultra cheap stuff.

When the difference between pub prices and off licenses was much less, then people just did all their drinking in the pub and as a consequence got far less drunk.

Even at the minimum 40p per unit, a can of 4% larger has around 2.5 units, so thats still only 90p a can.

No it doesn't 1.8units, I've got a can of carling here 4% Therfore it could still be sold at 72p.

But it isn't 4% lager that is the issue. It is the supermarket brand super strength 6.5% or 8% stuff that is being sold at a loss.

If the aim is to reduce drunken violence in city centres rather than messing about with price why not just introduce a legal limit for alcohol in public places, say 4 times the DD limit. Night in the cells and a couple of hundred quid fine for the first offence, should focus the mind. Unlike what is proposed which will just cost people more money.

Seeing as the government wish to increase the price of alcohol to stop abuses would it be an idea to reintroduce licencing hours as were in force when I was younger.

Monday to Friday 11-3 and 5.30 - 10.30

Saturday night pubs stayed open a bit later.

Sunday 12 - 2 and 7 - 10.30

There was 10 minutes drinking up time allowed.

Instead of purchasing alcohol from supermarkets as is done now go back to the off licences system where you went to buy it.

The police used to visit pubs and check youngsters ages. They did not tolerate public drunkenness

If people wish to get alcohol , they will no matter which laws are introduced. The idea is totally idiotic. But then, it would be.
