A quarter of a million? That'll do nicely

Nothing "went wrong." We get the quality of leadership that we want; after all, we get them because we want them and pick them above everyone else.

But did we? We only ever get to vote for people selected by the party officials themselves, even if they're a rubbish candidate, they only ever choose people in their own image.

And of course he can promise everything the people want, then renage on it when in power. Hence we get the kind of government full of millionaires we have now, who do not represent the wishes of the people who voted for them.

An independent candidate has next to no chance of winning without the money and power of a party behind him. Therefore the system perpetuates itself, and there seems no way of breaking the circle

I agree, both parties are as bad as each other. But that begs the question, what can the ordinary voter do about it?

I'm sick to the back teeth of corruption in politics, (along with a lot else.) Someone mentioned integrity, but that's just a distant memory these days.

These people grab our taxes and waste them, lie to us, feather their own nests, do favours for friends and cronies at our expense, and are so inept they couldn't organise a p*** up in a proverbial brewery, yet this is supposedly the best we can do?

Where did it all go so wrong...?

Its nothing new, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely, they both go hand in hand, greed and corruption is a human trait which will never be eradicated.

Dont be so defeatist. At the next election, an Independent candidate doesnt need money and power of a party, if anything, they will be a hindrance. We have the internet which will use platforms like this forum, and them getting the groundswell of people behind them, who in turn will assist in the promotion.

They'd need another 649 people and around £325,000 for deposits just to have a candidate for every seat.

Just one independent in parliament isn't going to have much effect on it's own.

They'd also have to convince voters that they're not just the same old lying corrupt politicians.

It's not impossible, but it's far from easy.

Imagine they got 30 + seats. They could be the minority in a coalition, and in effect voicing the peoples voice. Both of the parties would take them seriously, for fear of losing more seats at by elections.

Problem is, it's just too tempting to become just as corrupt as every other politician the world has ever known, given a bit of power. The only people that would put themselves up for being candidates & be successful at it are probably already corrupt.

No matter how good you are, you aren't going to win every seat, realistically you'd have to stand in a lot of seats @ £500 deposit to be able to get 30 MPs. As a new party you'd be more likely to lose all your deposits for the first couple of elections than get an MP. Look at The Green Party, they had a few name changes, but they first stood in 1974, they got their first seat in 2010 after having over 300 candidates.

You're going to need a few million pounds behind you, you're going to have to do a hell of a lot of work & you're going to have to be very popular to get 30 seats within the next 2 or 3 elections.

I still think our politicians are among the least corrupt politicians in the world. As bad as our politicians are, you only have to look at any other country in the world to see how it could be worse.

At least the Tories know how to charge, wasn't it cheaper under Labour? or am I just thinking about access to cabinet ministers? There are that many stories about corrupt politicians that I lose track. They need a clear price list. Maybe they could get into the 21st century & sell themselves on ebay?

Just read that on the BBC website. Nevermind, dissociation will begin and it'll all be swept under the carpet just like Lansley, Letwin, Conway, Spelman and the rest. I mean this unpopular government doesn't want to associate itself with people like that.

You need a deposit just to be able to stand as an independent just the same as the other parties only you've got to find it yourself
