Nagel
Yeah, those Westboro Baptists are such a good example of why our law is better. I disagree. It's better to have a law protecting free speech than a law preventing it.

shims
No our society will be better off with free speech, you can't Police the minds and thoughts of individuals. He didn;'t keep his thoughts to himself, he promoted them through a public channel. The context being that his victim was in a coma clinging to life. His actions weren't all that different from those of "RIP troll" Colm Coss, who served time. "Stacey broke down in tears as he was led away to begin his jail term." He can dish it out but he can't take it. Wimp.
Jim Hardie
Now ask yourself, if this had been said about joe bloggs off arbourthorne instead of this football guy would the response have been as swift and harsh? It was an exemplary sentence and will have widespread publicity. This wouldn't be the case for JB off the Arbourthorne.
Frank Sidney
All the sympathy and concern is a bit stomach churning though. Floral tributes at football grounds and headlines on the news all the time keeping us updated about his progress. Its all gone a bit too far, its like we're a nation in mourning, he didn't even die....We didn't even know him...

It is rather like Lady Di-and how many thugs have beaten up ethnics and escaped with a caution? In the 1970s these skinhead types got off scot free-now some idiot is in jail for an act of insensitivity which means one less space for a real racist who practises race hatred. Cyclone
Waste of time? I bet he doesn't do it again. Society will be better off with one less racist troll. Hope the trend continues. It won't actually stop him being racist you know.
Cyclone
Better question: whom did he try to incite? Both relevant, there must be some attempt to incite someone for the offence he committed...
Cyclone
Charged with what exactly? The American constitution allows free speech, even racist, sexist, hate, etc. Really, try exercising your free speech around the secret service by talking about blowing up the president... Or tell an air hostess that the company needs a bomb putting under it...
