Forumosaurus
You need a bit of mental agility to see that on another level its actually a question about how humanity has sleep walked into a situation whereby a minority have the whip-hand over the vast majority. Are you sure? Just look at all the unions getting what they want after constantly threatening strikes.
chem1st
Employers need employees the most. The employer generally has an advantage, he may be the landowner and force the peasants to work for him for example. But they might rise up and work the land for themselves. The employer must pay his employees well enough to keep them working for him if he is to keep his advantage. Else they might work for themselves or somebody else. taxman
Why aren't robots doing all the work whilst humans lounge around river banks painting, writing poetry and having sex? Technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last 100 years so why is everyone working harder for longer?

If only this was the case, most employers seemed to be in a race to the bottom as far as wages were concerned; the Labour government had to legislate to bring in a minimum wage. vinyl
And lets never forget that the Conservative party raged against the NMW.... You probably should also remember how many businesses have moved overseas to take advantage of lower wage rates, and how many fewer jobs there are here as a result.
