Francis Maude Should Resign

Recommended Posts

Guys stop defending what Maude said. He clearly stated the thing about jerry cans. He said it. He really did!

Listen to the fire service - the experts - not Maude.

The thing is by the law of averages if you broadcast this message to 60 million people somebody is going to do something stupid. Guaranteed. And it did happen.

Have some compassion for the lady who has had her life destroyed.

You can't hold the government to account for the sheer stupidity of some people.

You can't hold the government to account for the sheer stupidity of some people.

What the woman did was stupid but then again Maude made it sound like it was the most natural thing in the world to hoard a Jerry can of highly volatile fuel at home.

I think given the complete failure of the government to follow up the initial advice (which only a few idiots still think was ok) with a clarification of the law and a reminder of H&S issues I think there is a very serious case to answer. They have failed the public and I fear this won't be the last accident.

The government are accountable for creating chaos and panic saying there is going to be a tanker drivers strike when they don't know as the union as a mandate from the membership to take industrial action in whatever form it deems suitable.

The industrial action could be work to rule, overtime ban or a withdrawal of labour and could not take place until after the 7 days notice required by law as been served so it was not imminent as the government implied.

Even though he's a Tory **** I have some sympathy for Maude. All he tried to do was give a bit of advice and if some people are just thick it's not his fault.

Although someone did point out that if he'd given similar advice during the credit crunch it would have come out as "Your money's safe but you might want to withdraw a few grand just to be on the safe side".

He's still not responsible for the actions of others.

What people are failing to realise is this woman was pouring petrol into a jug in her KITCHEN, next to a GAS COOKER that was in use, ie a naked flame.

I hope she wanted it for a strimmer, the idea that she has a driving licence is a bit scary

So if you have a petrol driven lawn mower, strimmer, generator, chain saw, hedge trimmer or leaf blower where would you store your petrol?

This is the thing Resident. People are stupid. They do stupid stuff. People doing stupid stuff and petrol is not a good mix.

That is why Maude was wrong. What he said was potentially ok advice when targeted at a capable individual. But he was talking to 60 million, many of whom do not really understand what can happen with petrol when not handled properly.

He was wrong. And the results have been tragic.

In that case nobody in government can make a statement ever again should they be accountable for someones stupidity.

The union made no mention of strike it was a vote which to take industrial action and they received as a mandate from their membership. Somebody is making 2+2 =5 and using it for propaganda.

Tanker drivers delivering fuel to petrol pumps across the UK have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a dispute over safety and growing instability in the fuel industry.

Members of Unite working for five major fuel distribution firms delivering fuel for household names, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, BP, Shell and Esso backed a call for strike action by an average of 69 per cent. Turnouts across the five companies averaged 77.7 per cent.

Did they all get it wrong as well?
