Francis Maude Should Resign

Recommended Posts

In that case nobody in government can make a statement ever again should they be accountable for someones stupidity.

Francis Maude said tanker drivers had voted for strike action whereas he should have said industrial action which are not the same thing even though they could be so he was using words to sensationalise his statement.

He never said "Take petrol into a enclosed space and decant it into unsuitable containers next to a naked flame". Its pure idiocy to do so.

Blaming anyone else for this persons actions unfortunate as they are detracts from her own incompetence. The simple fact is shes got herself caught up in a bizarre group hysteria thats gripped the nation and shes a victim of her own foolishness

So what does this mean?

Tanker drivers delivering fuel to petrol pumps across the UK have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a dispute over safety and growing instability in the fuel industry.

Members of Unite working for five major fuel distribution firms delivering fuel for household names, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, BP, Shell and Esso backed a call for strike action by an average of 69 per cent. Turnouts across the five companies averaged 77.7 per cent.

It means that the Union have a mandate to call a strike if they think it necessary.

The Tories can only dream of such a resounding mandate.

So if you have a petrol driven lawn mower, strimmer, generator, chain saw, hedge trimmer or leaf blower where would you store your petrol?

Not the point. All it takes is a handful of people out of 60 million to behave stupidly and then you have an absolute tragedy.

The laws are so draconion around petrol storage for a reason. All Maude had to do with refer to them. He spent most of that day denying wrongdoing instead of deliviering a vital public safety message. He had loads of opportunities to put it right but like any politician admitting a mistake seemed beyond him.

Did they all get it wrong as well?

The government deliberately mislead the the public then or so incompetent that they are unable to understand unite's website that not all tanker drivers voted to strike.

There are 2 company's who have voted not to strike and things seemed to have changed since I retired the union put to much information into this web page whereas we always kept it to industrial action and even though it was decided at the meetings the employers were not told until the notice was submitted.

Not so. They can make a statement of course and in certain circumstances it's best if they provide a context that refers to laws that are designed to protect us. In this case it was especially important he did that.

The truth is this was an off the hoof policy. Not thought through. Schoolboy politics. The government got it so badly wrong so stop defending them.

I'm not sure that I agree. I think it was a deliberate act by the Government. I'm pretty sure that they thought it through. Events haven't quite turned out the way that they expected them to though.

When we are balloted which isn't often because employer-employee relations are pretty good we tend to get three choices:

1. No

2. Industrial action short of a strike

3. A strike

I thought the tanker drivers had gone for option 3 to be honest. Could be wrong. That doesn't mean there will be a strike - a lot has to happen before that. It's kind of a shot across the bows really.
