ferno
Who collects, refines and sells it? The government would, as I've said in several posts. These substances, cannabis, heroin, are dirt cheap to produce in large quantities. No criminal enterprise could possibly undercut prices. That's not to say there won't still be criminals, they'll diversify into financial fraud, trafficking women, extortion, all the usual stuff. They just won't get their pockets stuffed with wagon loads of cash, unimaginable wealth beyond all dreams.
Harleyman
What economists think: http://www.newstatesman.com/economy/2012/03/tax-drugs-cocaine-osborne Say a million people smoke an eighth of a gram of weed a week, at £30 a go. That's over £100 million a month that could be taxed. Just think how many schools and hospitals could be built with that money! And schools could educate the kids that smoking an eighth of a gram of weed a week when they grow up will help keep schools and hospitals running
ferno
Dirty money: Drugs lord who made £20m running 'Tesco' of the cannabis trade had so much cash he left piles of £20 notes to rot in warehouse Anthony Mills smuggled drugs in crates of flowers from Holland Leader of the 'Flowers Gang' faces up to 20 years in jail The skunk weed was grown in vast greenhouses hidden among legitimate crops. The gang paid £2,200 per kg for the drug, before selling it on to regional wholesalers in the UK at £3,400 who traded it on the street for £5,760 per kg. Regular shipments arrive at Harwich port in East Anglia, with shrink-wrapped packages of skunk hidden inside boxes of flowers. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2009434/drugs-baron-created-Tesco-cannabis-smuggling-facing-20-years-bars.html#ixzz1rI3MnFHu So much cash, it was rotting. All thanks to prohibition.

Alcohol may be worse, but heroin is much more addictive and it's the addictiveness which makes it a problem.

Chris_Sleeps
And schools could educate the kids that smoking an eighth of a gram of weed a week when they grow up will help keep schools and hospitals running They could teach that "drugs are bad, mmmm'kay!" and then you'll have a society that spends a lot of money locking people up. Like now.

Chris_Sleeps
Wont it be the same stuff? No. Medecinal opiates are good, and are made by happy farmers in sunny fields. Recreational drugs are bad, made by evil men who torture their donkeys.
