Phanerothyme
We could even go further & develop Afghanistan to supply it all, legally, cut off the illegal supply too at the same time as killing the demand. A proposal aired briefly on the forum five years ago. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=215706

ferno
Pharmaceutical heroin is about as dangerous as peanut butter. That's why it's given to babies in hospital.
HeadingNorth
That is why it is illegal. Quite right. Circular reasoning is the only reason it's illegal, but some people still don't recognise circular reasoning when they see it.

harvey19
I think consideration has to be given to the fact that it is addictive and probably this plays a big part on the legal position. Why have members of the population addicted to a drug, legal or not, when it is unnecessary for life. I understand the craving caused by the addiction is stronger than for other substances and therefore causes more drastic measures to be taken to obtain supplies. Simply, why become addicted in the first place, it is self inflicted.

When looking at the drugs issue people look to blame the drugs, but really we need to look at the root causes as to why these people take drugs. They don't initially take them because they are addictive, they are driven, often through depression or an inability to cope with their current situation. Curing the physical part of addiction is easy, it's curing the physcological reasons within that person that drives them to drugs that is the hard part. Quite right and in such cases such drugs should be prescribed if they help. This is very different though when the reason is recreational and those that that take them are aware of the problems they can cause themselves and their family. Well most habits start off as recreational don't they? smoking, drinking etc Just because someone becomes dependant to the point where it the habit becomes destructable it doesn't mean that the problems they have to endure as a result of the addiction should be viewed as self-inflicted.
