And it isn't only disabled folk who my be affected. For many elderly people, the scooter is their only means of getting out and about; otherwise they may as well lock their doors and await the Grim Reaper. growup
Yes maybe if you are getting mobility benefit you should be exempt and the people who use them for private taxis SHOULD pay tax etc but not everyone who is disabled gets mobility benefit. If you are over 65 when you have a reduction in your mobility you are not entitled to any benefit but will continue to get it if you were under 65 when you first applied for the benefit. Personally I think the people who do use them for leisure purposes should be taxed as they can occasionally be a menace due to their high speeds on a public footpath/low speeds on the roads. However, this would not be possible without penalising people with a genuine need. It has taken my family months to convince my step grandad that a scooter would benefit both him and my grandma. This has improved both their lives but I don't think he would have agreed if he was going to have to pay for the privilege.

According to sources the speed for scooters on the pavement must not exceed 4mph, even those that can go faster for road use are governed if they intend to use them for both road and pavement. Of course this could be another idea tossed in the air to get an opinion.
Plain Talker
Along with religion, pitbulls, speeding, parking tickets, Parson Cross, the Manor etc What are you suggesting seeing as this is a new subject relating to Mobility Scooters? exactly what I said, dear. The subject of Mobility Scootas, including the matter of training the operators/ taxing/ insuring is not a new subject, it has been covered before. It's not that difficult a statement to get your head round. in fact, this thread is quite recent, from November 2011 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=895010 and this thread http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=536598 covers exactly that. we've also got these:- http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=745695 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=506691 I think that lot easily counts as "not actually needing yet another thread on the subject"! This is a new piece of legislation that is going through the EU which looks like that it WILL become law and as such it has not been discussed on S/F, i am sure that there are many people who use S/F that this piece of legislation will affect adversely who would like to know these facts? does the fact that a topic as been discussed 2-3-4 times some thing new about it cannot be discussed?
