The UK's manufacturing sector grew at its fastest pace for 10 months in March, a survey has indicated.

The Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing rose to 52.1 last month from 51.5 in February. A reading above 50 implies growth.

The data is an encouraging sign that the UK economy grew in the first three months of 2012 and avoided a recession.

Trade deficit was down to just 7.1 billion last quarter.

We only need to start exporting another £120 of (entirely home made) goods per person per quarter to start breaking even!

I'm sure you are right. At least our motor sector is booming.

Car production in the UK rose by 5.8% in 2011, industry figures show.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said manufacturing had ended the year with a 1.6% rise in December, producing a total of 1,343,810 vehicles in the year.

The SMMT said record exports had been the main driver of growth, with more than 80% of vehicles exported.

Although production rose last year, the SMMT said last week that new car sales in the UK had fallen 4.4% in 2011.

Engine production also rose by 4.9% to just over 2.5 million, despite a modest 1.3% fall in December.

"UK vehicle and engine production continues to lead the manufacturing recovery," said Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT.

If only the unemployed could grow potatoes for personal profit upon the land that sits idle claiming agricultural subsidy payments from the EU in order to keep the wealthy landowners wealthy!

nothing wrong...with working the land.....loads of space on the gleadless valley...so get out the ploughs...and start planting....happy days

The land sits idle, and the poor destitute.
