muffin12
My bathroom is currently downstairs as part of a single storey extension. I am wanting to put the bathroom upstairs but do not want to make either of the two bedrooms smaller and thought about extending above the existing single storey. How do I find out if this is strong enough to hold? Will there be paper work somewhere when the extension was done. I am not in a position to dig the ground out to look at foundations. Africanqueen
Why don't you get some quotes from builders? They would tell you what work was involved including planning applications etc...
loopyloo2000
It's all about the depth of the footings that the single story extension was built on and if it'll be strong enough to support the weight of a further story. I believe it's possible to use vertical steel ibeams to support it rather than demolishing the existing extension and starting again with deeper foundations. You can tell I've got a builder in the family! Get a buildings surveyor round and he'll advise, it won't be that expensive.
