Gemma C
I bought a Royal School of Needlework CD which I really like. It's not expensive, and you can import photos and pictures and it converts them to cross stitch for you, which you can then edit, or you can design things from scratch. It has a choice of coloured threads from several suppliers, so you can choose your favourite and has an option to make the chart either as symbols, colour blocks, or to look like aida. It's simple to use, I really like it! http://www.amazon.co.uk/School-Needlework-Definitive-Stitch-Tapestry/dp/B000053ZWU/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt The only downside is that when you convert things it doesn't add backstitch detail, you have to do that yourself, but I have created a few designs using it and now use it to design cross stitch jewellery, cards, and keyrings. (I have a little cross stitch business, http://www.yousewshould.com).
