London met uni considering banning alcohol for its muslim students.

Recommended Posts

That's misrepresenting what I said I never claimed the university had 'set down rules', merely that the university itself admitted that this was the situation many of it's female students were in.

Perhaps the uni should be encouraging a bit more freedom for these women rather than simply describing this as a 'conservative attitude' and making adjustments to accomodate such attitudes?

That would be a very stupid interpretation of what you said anyway. How could the University possibly dictate to the local population that Muslim women within four miles must attend that University, and must be escorted, which is what ferno is inferring you to have said :loopy:

The University were just descibing a situation as it is, and all I can see is this is exactly what you said too.

And as the university itself says the muslim women who attend the university are not allowed to attend a uni away from home or even in the centre of London, and they have to be escorted to and from uni by a male relative.

The university did not say that.

I know, but badlittlepup claimed it was a university dictat that ALL muslim students comply by those rules.

That's totally false.

Taken in context with the quote in the article, badlittlepup was correct. It is obvious you have interpreted badlittlepup's post wrong. :)

Comments are interesting:

Just as I suspected from yesterday's THE story, Gillies is using Muslim and female students (and now apparently Buddhists and Protestants) as a shield to force through some unpopular cuts to services.

The giveaway was the complete absence of quotes from any other individual or group. Also, the claim that women were being chaperoned was patently absurd.

I'm left to wonder why the THE didn't bother to approach the student's union before rushing to publish yesterday.

All that is is a listing on Stonewall for the uni which says it has an LGBT society which could be one man and it's dog, in fact it's website is no longer up and running. It has one comment saying it was alright but it certainly doesn't negate what I was saying.

I don't have figures but it has a reputation as being a bit risky and not that welcoming as far ass LGBT students are concerned in the local area.

In fact look at someone who was invited to talk there recently who had extreme homophobic views:

or this guy...also invited to speak

Unfortunately, that's not where the new bar is:

The story's a storm in a tea cup. Your disgraceful dishonest claims about what's happened are depressingly predictable.

Good lord, not only did you not bother to read the original article the OP linked to you can't even do the most basic fact checking.

Here is a link to 'The Hub's' website.

They are thinking of banning it because a high percentage of people (Muslims) don't drink

The percentage is 20% which I don't even consider high, maybe about 30% yeh, you could say a third... so then think about change.

But if someone was to turn this on its head and say a high percentage of people (90% ? ) don't wear veils (or some other Muslim dress wear) so we should ban those, then the crap would really hit the fan.
