I suspect he saw THIS shop, a few doors down,, and misread the spelling on the sign:-

I lived near Turin Street, further down on Roman Road, and it ANNOYS ME VERY MUCH when people make up stupid stories in order to slag off the East End. It's got problems like any other area, but really, Swinton Buidling Society broadcasting Louis Farrakhan, I mean, come on!

Roman Road is not near Turin Street, that's the other end of Bethnal Green Road past the tube station. And if you lived there how come as earlier in this thread you have no idea E1 or areas around Aldgate tubes are Whitechapel? You don't sound like a local.

And I'm sorry but there is no way you've ever lived there if you don't know what the problems around there are like. Even with the best most politically correct will in the world you'd have to be blind or in complete denial not to realise that there are problems in that area. The levels of racial tension both ways are extremely high.

Even people who are Bangladeshi and have lived in the area admit their are problems and a lack of integration, there have been books and films about it FFS. Have you never read 'Brick Lane'? Even the uni has admitted girls have to be escorted to and from uni by male relatives, there are documented reports of extremist activity in the area such as threats made to women who don't cover their heads and the attack on the RE teacher who they didn't believe should be teaching girls. I don't believe for a second you have any real experience of living in that area.

Ah, ha ha. No, it was definitely on the corner of Turin Street because I could hear it from my flat in the summer when the windows were open. I apologise that I do not keep a full record of shops that have closed or opened in areas I used to live, an oversight on my part as I'm sure you do.

I agree with most of that except the notion that this about 'not offending' people. I believe it to be intended to broaden the number of events that Muslim students might be inclined to join in with - which is no bad thing.

Whilst I disagree with most of the knee-jerk reaction to this non-story, and agree with your point, it is also the point that most concerns me.

People that don't want to drink alcohol attending an event where alcohol is served don't have to drink alcohol, their freedom is preserved. People that do want to drink alcohol attending an event where alcohol is not served cannot drink alcohol, their freedom is restricted. It's a one way door.

I'm all for allowing private organisations being free to do whatever they want, but pandering to people because of their religious beliefs, even with the good intentions of being more "inclusive" just worries me.

There are many areas in Egypt where alcohol is not available, where it once was. It didn't change overnight, it started with non-stories just like this.

they can't be that radical round that area, from what I see, there are pubs and betting offices running well, and without interference....

Would you have said that there were radicals about on Abbeydale Road before 9/11, well there was...

Your logic is naively flawed.
