Vote lib dem in local elections?

Recommended Posts

They are a weaker partner in government, yet they managed, through compromise to get some of their policies through. Do you think everything would be better if they hadn’t entered into a coalition or if the Conservatives had won outright?
Crumbs given to keep everyone sweet and not make it look like it was the mistake it was letting the Tories get back behind the wheel.

It was always going to be that they would get SOME policies through, if not they would not have been there, what was not seen however was how quick they could be persuaded to drop the position on the own policies so easy, and seemingly bend over without much of a fight.

Had they been more vocal and fought more on key things like tuition fee's then they would still be seen as a credible party, instead of a bunch of turn coats.

Without a doubt Nationally the Lib Dems have continually brought the Tories various bills more to the centre ground. However, the big 4 around most negotiations are Cameron/Osborne/Clegg/Alexander and herein lie the problem. Danny now regularly looks like a Tory puppet, and whether its newnight/ch4 or westminister, Osborne trots him out to field and shield the bull**** whilst hiding behind closed doors himself. Clegg & Cameron are virtually the same person, and Osborne spends way too much time with his lobbyists and bankers.

Cables letter to the big 4 was actually on the money. There is no coherent message. The winners are continually who shouts the loudest. And this isnt the Lib Dems.

Maybe lack of experience is a problem for the Lib Dems. But they have some huge heavyweights in Parliament who should be listened to more.

Clegg is toxic now and will be given a plum EU job or Peerage just before the end of the term, and hopefully Simon Hughes will take over the party. Locally i cant see a Lib Dem winning that seat, but i cant see Labour making too many in roads either.

Its a pity this coalition looks weak, because Sheffield cant afford another Labour local government that isnt going to be brought to heels by a good opposition. This city deserves better.

You really know what you are talking about ;)

So as the weaker partner they've done a reasonable job in very difficult circumstances.

THEY HAVE DONE SOD ALL.

Apart from make a mockery of themselves and turn people off voting for them.

You convince yourself they are doing a reasonable job, many would disagree.

An interesting piece here to add to the debate....

http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/mehdi-hasan/2010/07/nick-clegg-public-conservative

Clegg in a city such as Sheffield which has one of the highest number of public servants states he doesnt believe in slash & burn of the public sector, but then changes his mind after a discussion with Mervyn King, which in itself is debated.

It never fails to amuse/disgust me, that on one hand Mervyn can state why are there not more riots due to the cuts, but then on the other, says the cuts are necessary....to us, not them.

Continuing saga of hypocrisy from our elite.

the government wouldn't exist without them - if the libdems had agreed to support on a bill by bill basis, do you think lansley's NHS killing madness would've got through? clegg and alexander wouldn't have a ministerial jag waiting each morning but we would still have an NHS.

corrupt, power hungry judases who (hopefully) will pay a very dear price

To be fair Frank, they didnt have much of a choice. If they didnt choice to go into coalition with the Tories, most political pundits would have been screaming blue murder at them. The way the votes went they did have to.

However, they didnt & should agree to all the policies. Thats where they have failed.
