alchresearch
Whos to say the death penalty doesnt work, providing there is substantial evidence. 100% of people who have the death penalty do not go on to re-offend
Tsar Chasm
But all that will do is lead to anarchy:o I wonder how things were before we had a police force? ........................................
HeadingNorth
100% of people who have the death penalty do not go on to re-offend Wouldn't people be more concerned with the overall level of crime rate? There are plenty of countries which have a death penalty and a crime rate much higher than ours, so arguing that re-introducing it would lead to a fall is clearly erroneous. You have to wonder what the crime rate in those countries would be without the death penalty though...so arguing it wouldn't have an effect could be wrong also.. But you could still argue that it isn't that good as a deterent if the crimes that merit death are still committed.

Unless you knew how bad things would be without it in that particular country you can't say how good a deterrent it is..

There are plenty of other countries with a death penalty and a crime rate much lower than ours. There are also countries with no death penalty and a low crime rate; and still other countries with no death penalty and a high crime rate. The obvious conclusion to draw is that the presence or absence of a death penalty does not have a bearing on crime rates. Neither a good one nor a bad one. There must be other factors that dictate how much crime is going on.

I suppose if you drew figures from American states that upheld the death penalty and from those that do not it might give an idea of how un/successful it was in reducing the related crimes. As each country is different and has different social/cultual norms I'm not sure how you can come up with your "obvious conclusion" In the UK the murder rate has doubled since the abolition of the death penalty.. http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN03805.pdf
