xenia
Agreed, Scargill put in for a 30% wage increase, totally unaceptable at the time, although the miners deserved a decent wage for the job they did. The issue was about mine closures. If Scargill had not been determined to become Fidel Castro we would now have a small but growing clean coal industry. ricgem2002
Completely agree, weak management was a huge contributory factor. Also small firms without unions the way forward. and powerfull management with no regards for the workers is that the way forward too
MadManMoon
A bit of last minute campaigning its too late for the Lib / Dems they are about to get their comeuppance …….. I hope they have enjoyed their two minutes of fame because it’s all over …….. never mind I am sure the Tories will welcome Clegg with open arms when his own party finally get some balls and show him the door. The best thing the LibDems can do is to walk away from this coalition. The Tories are going down and they will take the LibDems with them and then blame LibDems for the downfall. xenia
So why haven't we now, since Scargill etc is in the past? My last pit was Grimethorpe, there they had Finnish scientists working on clean coal technology in 1985. Had it been developed, by now we would have a thriving coal industry. The NUM refused to discuss the possibility with the government and consequently the project was abandoned. The government were all for it, LABOUR and the NUM would not cooperate. Consequently imported coal and gas and no more mining industry. Thats what really happened, not the usual socialist rant about what Thatcher did to the communities, she did nothing but remove a load of little Hitlers, the damage was done by Arthur and his gang backed by Lord Kinnock &Co. But someone said the other day that there was 3 years worth of coal mountained up in 1984 and the reason why they were closing the pits is because they were uneconomical, as we were lead to believe. Surely there's no point in digging up fresh coal if you can't sell the old stock?
donkey
The man in charge of the Bank of England says that the Labour Government ignored their warnings, the eventual bank bailout came too late, caused the recession, and the loss of a million jobs. That's a bit of a bombshell to drop the day before an election. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financialcrisis/9242161/Labour-lost-a-million-jobs-says-Bank-chief.html Yesss, they caused a global recession. They caused the sub prime mortgage crash in the USA. Do you think they were also responsible for the great plague and the asteroid which killed off thye dinosaurs? MrSmith
Yesss, they caused a global recession. They caused the sub prime mortgage crash in the USA. Caused it, NO, but definitely contributed to it and they didn’t prepare for it.
donkey
Caused it, NO, but definitely contributed to it and they didn’t prepare for it. Ditto every slippery politician who is too close to the money men. About 90% of the ones who matter. And it's no coincidence that they are the ones who matter. Attempts to apportion blame for the global economic slump to some mainstream political parties but not others shows the kind of blind adhenence to partisan party politics which is helping to ensure that nothing is really done to protect us from all being dropped in the doo doo again the next time financial masters of ther universe find it expedient to trash the global economy.
