callippo
it came already to its customary crescendo and all campaigning has basically been suspended. the French way is to allow about 48 hours before the poll happens, when campaigning is suspended, to give the voters a chance for reflection before they do the deed. They don't advertise on television during this period, or hold huge rallies, like their fellow Republicans the United States do right up until their voting day, be it a Republican or Democratic party rally. is this wise? mj.scuba
Yes I think so after weeks of in your face campaigning, perhaps give people chance to absorb a bit more of the substance and look past the flags and slogans.
tinfoilhat
A very good idea. I'm quite interested to see if the socialist chap gets in, what he does and more importantly, if it works. It could end up shaping labours policies come the next election.

Chris_Sleeps
It's Hollande's election to lose, which I doubt he will do.
callippo
I don't think the actual result of this particular election over the water is in much doubt, Hollande will win by a huge margin 6 or 7 points, probably. I just think the way the French Republic does the campaign, is worthy of note.
Harleyman
Hollande is an Obama copycat. Where have I heard the word "change" used before? Only difference in France is they call it "Le Change" Well he'll find himself dealing with the same problems Sarkozy has and he wont find the magic silver bullet either. The prevailing policy to solve the Euro crisis is more cuts and more austerity and he'll have to go against Merkel if he wants to change that policy which some pundits are now saying is doing more harm than good. But tell that to the Germans The long love affair between France and Germany may start to come apart at the seams in the next year or two.
callippo
Hollande is an Obama copycat. oh jeez harley you have been out of Europe for far too long. The USA has got no influence on this election. The French left is probably hoping that Hollande will turn into Mitterand, who was this similarly serving bureaucrat when he first got elected, very low profile and a bit nodescript. He got in by default, not a charismatic candidate at all. In the event, Mitterand ended up changing the destiny of France.
