Pedestrian Etiquette

Why do pedestrians like to walk on the right hand side of the footpath in the UK, when the road rules are 'keep left'?:loopy:

In my experience they don't. They walk in the middle making it more difficult for fast walkers to overtake.

Everyone walks in the middle usually and at their own speed. Which means you having to try and look for a way past without barging them out the way.
