OMG - people who believe they are better drivers when stoned is worrying, they need to have their licences revoked asap.

Indeed, people who drive while drunk or drug drive should be forcibly removed from their licenses.

Driving while intoxicated is a well known way to cause an accident on the road. Although not as common, you can be charged with that offense for more than just drinking alcohol. It also includes anything else that causes impairment, such as drugs (whether they are legal ones or not), including marijuana.

However, 20 years of study has concluded that marijuana smokers may actually be getting a bad rap and that they may actually have fewer accidents than other drivers. There have been several studies done over the past 20 years and every one of them has revealed that using marijuana actually has a very minor, if any, effect on the ability of a person to drive a car or other vehicle.

A lot of studies have actually shown cannabis users to be safer drivers than sober people!

THC acts upon specific sites in the brain, called cannabinoid receptors, kicking off a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to the "high" that users experience when they smoke marijuana. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. The highest density of cannabinoid receptors are found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentrating, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.1

Not surprisingly, marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that, in chronic users, marijuana's adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.2 As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time.:D

How would that help someone to drive better?

That wouldn't help them be safer drivers. Neither would it preclude other effects of the drug which might. What if it made them less liable to outbursts of temper, or generally more cautious, for example? There has to be some reason why studies conlude they a less likely to be involved in accidents.

Presumably you can produce research demostrating people with keener intellects are safer drivers?

These are the effect that I highlighted which most defiantly won't make someone a better driver.

Good driving involved good hazard perception skills, good coordination and the ability to think. All of these are adversely affected by marijuana

Yet your speculations are not born out by the statistical evidence.
