Old Sheffield pubs from the past gone for ever

Recommended Posts

Yes apparently Joe is still around he has a job as a caretaker at some tennis club up Ecclesall, there was a roomer going about that he had kick the bucket but it was found to be not true, there was a thread on here about him a bit ago, I once had an argument with him in the Nether Edge hotel and he lifted me up by my nipples and pushed me back wards out of the place and I am 6foot5 tall.

Hi Shogun

Yes that sounds like JOE that was one of his party pieces good job it wasn't Killby his party piece was to hold you by the throat slide you up a wall then get hold of your nuts and stretch you and that is true I have seen him do it outside SHADES club which was under the the old Greystones picture house on Ecclesall rd I also heard the rumor about Joe passing away but someone informed me that it wasn't true it all seems such a long time ago now but had some happy times as well as rough ones way back then.

Not sure if this has been discussed earlier on this thread - but, what pubs are remaining down near the Wicker Arches if any? I remember many great pub crawls there and the only name of one I can remember is the Big Gun I think?

......and that's the only one left!

Gone are the Station, Viaduct, New White Lion, Brown Cow, Bull and Oak. All in the last fifteen years.

Traveling around Sheffield it is so sad to see how many pubs have gone from all areas of Sheffield, history has gone for good some of them were great old buildings some not so good, all full of memories for the regulars who frequented them in the past, names and faces from the past landlords and characters all of them do you have a story about your long gone regular pub.

My favourite place was the Hermitage, next door to the Locarno. We used to go in the Hermitage for a few pints, then in the Mecca around 10.30pm and check the birds out and dance along to the great Eric Baxter and his orchestra. Met my wife there on a Friday night,it was a wonderful time and place, ( now Sainsburys), the memories still live on strongly.

I used to love the Hermitage, The Albion and a really great pint of Magnet in the Tramways before going into the Locarno/Tiffanys.

It seems the pubs are now pandering to the students and even the Surrey has been called some silly name.

I miss the Moseleys Arms at West Bar.

the Tramway pub was run by a mate of my Dad called Ken Carr who died of a heart attack at 40 odd, I used to go to that pub with my Dad many times it was a John Smiths house the place is all boarded up and derelict now.

I used to love the Moseley as well, went in a few times, loved the Hermo used to go in Lansdowne across road every Friday night. The Tramway was great also; as were all the pubs on London Road, I gather the Sheldon now shut as well.

Don't get me started on today's pubs, way, way too poncey :gag::gag:
