Yes it was, I guess then that the libdem want a local tax to be a percentage of income.

Yes, exactly like income tax as it stands, but a small % of it set by the local council and paid to them (probably through HMRC and PAYE so as to keep it as simple as possible).

Thanks for all the replies, some interesting ideas amongst them. Still no explanation of how endlessly borrowing more and more money eventually reduces borrowing however.

You take the borrowed money to the casino. If you are lucky your debts are cleared. If you are unlucky you have more debts and borrow more to go to casino until you get lucky enough to pay all debts.

Know any casinos where the house limit is £1 trillion?

Yes, please do. Besides most of that work and others like Wembley Stadium etc were contracted out to private companies. As for the rest of it, well what do the government expect if it under funds and understaffs public services? And that's even before the forthcoming public sector cull.

I know, maybe it can spend more by borrowing more so that the services aren't understaffed and won't keep wasting so much money... That way we'll save money won't we

Or perhaps they could rope in the tax they are owed from exiled offshore accounts, maybe that would help?

Doubt it, it's probably not going to help by an entire order of magnitude. Not to mention that if it were as easy as just saying it, then they'd have done it already.

As the French approach seems to be make "the rich" pay for everything lets see how that works out for them before we contemplate that as a strategy shall we?

Our moderate tax rates seem to be sucking personal tax revenue from France into our coffers at the moment, corporate tax may well follow.

Plus, by some accounts, a lot of wealthy French citizens now busily relocating to Londres.
