Sheffield Star non-stories megathread

Never mind about the grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. What bothers me about the headlines in today's Star is the one about Ched Evans, the Sheffield United footballer, "fighting to clear his name."

The wording of the headline gives the impression that an injustice may have been done. If it had been someone of lesser importance than a high profile footballer, the headline might well have read something like: "Convicted rapist appeals guilty verdict."

It happens all the time in the press, over where I live as well. Sports and entertainment personalities get the soft shoe treatment, while everyone else is portrayed in a starker fashion, no holds barred.

Message to mods: I am not trying to open up a debate about the merits of the court decision here. This is a posting about the way that the press treats personalities differently from ordinary people. If people stay on topic, this should pose no problems.

Well said Roger no mention whatsoever of the poor girl involved.

I was also surprised when I saw the headline on this story this morning. It refers to him by his forename only which I thought seemed a little over familiar for someone with a serious conviction, no matter what his profession. Checked again this evening and they haven't changed it

Yes, I don't believe for a moment they'd be calling a convicted rapist by his first name if he was just an ordinary guy on the street.

Well, there's room for hope. The Daily Mail's account of the situation is brilliantly crafted and right on the nose. It focuses on how footballers who commit serious crimes are treated with kid gloves by the male-dominated Football League and of course, by the fans who see the perpetrators as victims.

This is the kind of journalism that brings awareness of an important issue to light and puts the Star, by comparison, to shame.

The Daily Mail is not my own personal choice of a newspaper but thank you for pointing out this article its the only one I have read that hits the nail on the head.
