Puffin4
I remember Westbar Hostel, it was still running when I left the city in 1959. (Not that I ever had occasion to use it) Mike

The Brittania Theatre was across from the 'Hostel'.

John Dory
Didn't it used to be a department store at some point? I remember being taken there for some clothing a couple of times when I was young around the late 70's.

hillsbro
Bradford Woollen Mills I think. The Bradford Woollen Co. occupied the former Don cinema; they extended the original building and renamed it "Progress House". It's now occupied by the Armadillo self-storage company. The former West Bar hostel was occupied by P.W. Lacey - here's a photo. More information is in this thread.. denlin
Think the Don cinema was built in 1912, the P W Lacey building was once the hostel where my grandad spent the latter part of his life
Sooperdooper
My uncle Harold Fothergill worked at Bradford Woollen and his wife Vera ran the grocery shop they owned opposite Lacey's. Next door used to be a pie shop, my uncle Jacks great times
alantalbot
The hostel which is now flats was for homeless people and run by church, not for tramps. My grandad lived and died there the year I was born 1951 and he came from a well to do family Sorry but it was run as a private lodging house, did your grandfather go by the name of Manny?
