My mum has never had a credit card or loan in her life, and thus getting her first mobile phone was a nightmare because she had very little credit history. Like the poster above, she was able to pay a deposit up front which then allowed her to get a phone on contract. Pay as you go would be a better bet if you can live with a cheaper phone.
