telman
Don't buy a Mercedes A170, they are a money pit after a couple of years. Stick to simple and easy to mend cars.
convert
I have to say the Audi A2 is a good choice, but you can also get a VW Polo, A Skoda Fabia or a Seat Ibiza with the same 1.4Tdi engine. The big advantage of the A2 is the aluminium body shell / panels (some panels are composite). This means no body / chassis rust, ever. They do have a habit of breaking front springs (as do must cars on our roads in Sheffield). We've had an A2 1.4Tdi SE for over six years now, and other than a couple of springs, brake discs / pads and regular servicing, it's been great. They do tend to hold their value though. 5K might get you a good Mk5 Golf Tdi, my old 1.9 used to get around 40mpg around town, and 50mpg on a 'run'. My current 1.6Tdi gets about 25% more.
