The iconic Raleigh Chopper designer has died.

Recommended Posts

Ah, I remember the ol' raleigh chopper. Unfortunately I didn't own one, cos my folk presumably couldn't afford one for me, but I had plenty of mates who did have them, and I was as jealous as hell.

I did actually work for a few years for Raleigh Industries back in the 80s and remember it was definitely one of my happier times in any employment. We all worked hard, but had fun during the day too. Happy days!

I was the proud owner of a Chopper, my little brother had a Chipper (anyone remember those?).

Though it was a truly iconic design, these cycles are responsible for god know how many scared scrotums owing to the sturmey archer toggle chain easy to adjust gear set-up; there were people around that couldn't pass an unattended chopper without nicking the gear lever top and adjusting the toggle chain to cause a slip gear.

I had painful childhood experiences thanks to Mr Oakley.
