syne
I don't think it's evenly matched at all. This country runs on capitalism and has done for thousands of years. Socialism's something for nothing creed is attractive and has had some success but only in the short term. In the long run Socialists always run out of other people's money. Socialism cannot and does not create wealth. Only Capitalism can do that and that is why the vast majority of the British people support it. Yes, it's had a bit of a knock recently, but that was due to greedy and clumsy Socialists capitalists trying to get more out of the system than was prudent. But, Capitalism will be back growing the economy again until Labour get back in and trash it all yet again. there are very few wall street/ banking/investment trading socialists
Mister M
Meanwhile back to the origin of the thread: Adrian Beecroft, venture capitalist, big donor to the Tory party and owner of Wonga (the payaday loan shark company), and author of the report commisioned by Cameron to cut employees rights. He's been in the news again today complaining that Vince Cable is a socialist! As if, more like Beecroft is a hard right winger and most people will be to the left of him. In spite of his net worth (£100million), he will benefit greatly from the economic instability created by weakening workers rights. Why do right wingers on here complain about 'union bruvvers', when they have someone as venal and morally repugnant as Beecroft contributing to their party? Jim Graham, your signature to your post is appropriate for Beecroft - There is low lofe in high places.

Lounge Jay
The mixed element is the capitalists create the wealth They create it all on their own do they? Stelios mans the baggage handling area and the check in desk? Richard Branson mans the ticket kiosk, is a conductor on the train?? and the socialists spend it. Whats the point of wealth creation if you dont spend it? as long as its spent wisely its all good. (spare me the the toe-curling examples of waste in recent years because I know all about it). Mecky
Your assertion was: it was the Tories who did away with grammar schools and created the comprehensives, Thatcher actually. which is factually inaccurate. It's not often you're wrong but you're wrong again. But everyone except you, it seems, knows that what you say isn't the case. There were a few trials of comprehensive schools before 1970 but they were nowhere the amounts switched bewteen 1970-1975. I believe there are one or two privately funded grammar schools left.
