Thomas Rotherham college-asbestos removal

Recommended Posts

Anyone on with specialist knowledge of asbestos removal?

During term-time 2 weeks before the Easter holidays this year contractors were brought in to Thomas Rotherham College to remove asbestos lagged pipes.

Although the area was kind of tented off, smoke and dust from the angle grinders/cutters covered one side of the building. Staff and pupils were complaining about the smoke, sore throats, coughs etc.

I'm not suggesting everyone who was there will contract asbestosis and I understand there are many other dangers out there.

But surely there's got to be some kind of health and safety regulations on schools regarding dangerous substance removal? Just doesn't make sense to carry out the work while there's kids there.

I wouldn’t have expected dust to spread from the area where asbestos is being removed; the last time I saw asbestos removal, the area was completely sealed using polythene sheeting, with a large fan and filter creating a negative pressure in the sealed area. The workers entered and exited through a decontamination area in which they removed their contaminated coveralls. All material removed from the area was double bagged and there was no dust.

Not really looking for vague reminiscences of people having seen asbestos removal work done or a critique of the parent's mentalities.

Would however appreciate a reply from someone with a working knowledge of asbestos removal or health and safety in schools.

Well I'm sorry I tried to help with a reply, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about regarding a critique of the parent's mentalities.

May be putting a little effort into your own research using Google will give you the information you seek.

Oooooooooh. Handbags. I was referring to the other answer with regards to the critique of parent's mentalities.

Not looking for replies from people with such delicate sensibilities either ;)

I have no access to codes of practice for asbestos workers and I was hoping there'd be a few on here who worked in that industry.

Stop clogging my thread with emo replies. :hihi:

Quoting the other poster instead of my post would have made more sense then.
