Looking at taking up Martial Arts - any ideas which one?

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to get fit and take up Martial Arts as a hobby. I keep reading comments about Karate, Kickboxing, Jujitsu etc. trouble is I'm none the wiser after reading them.

I'm quite fit and don't have any problems like asthma etc, however, unfortunatly I've got ginger hair.

Where are the clubs? I'm keen to try all different styles out and see which one suits me

right first things first... our club does take ginger people..:D

no really, this sort of thing has been asked before and by far the best/simplest/right answer is.....

try every thing, but dont tie in to anything until you feel that you really want to do it.

any way..... my club, Gracie Barra Sheffield, Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

in a nutshell brazilian jiu-jitsu (bjj) is a grappling and submission based art that is world recognised as the best grappling art about, everyone who trains for things like the ultimate fighting championships (ufc), pride fighting championships (japan). does atleast a minimum amount of bjj.

it is a "sport" more than "art" but i can 100% asure you that no experiance is needed, no level of fitness is needed, and no specialist equipment is needed.... plus the fisrt lesson is free.

we train at 393 Club 393 Langsett Road, Hillsborough behind Morrisons on the tram route.

like i said ANYONE is welcome, if you want anymore details please feel free to contact my instructor below:-

For a list of martial arts clubs in Sheffield contact the Sheffield Information Service in the Central Library on Surrey Street, S1. They carry lists of all the different stlyles, clubs, meetings and contacts.

We have a free informatin notice board at Get Physical, 285 Ecclesall Road, S11 that has about 20 assorted clubs on it. We've had experience in a number of martial arts but remain impartial so we can posssibly offer some advice as to a suitable style.

Only way you'll find out what suits you, is try them. Different people look for different things.

Styles and clubs are very different though so don't just go to two kung fu classes and think martial arts are boring and too esoteric or go to kickboxing and think they're too hardcore / painful - they all have something to offer.

To summarise:

Traditional japanese martial arts (karate, taekwondo, jujitsu) as they're taught by many people nowadays are good if you're looking to meet new people and you're bothered about eventually having a black belt (for relatively little effort). They also offer a spiritual / philosophical aspect, though chinese arts e.g. kung fu, tai chi are much more that way inclined.

Combat sports (kickboxing, thai boxing, BJJ, judo) are good for fitness and for learning to fight effectively fairly quickly. I've listed two striking arts and two grappling arts, for an all round view you'd need to do one striking and one grappling style, but if you're looking to take any aspect each one is a sport in their own right.

There are also more self defence oriented styles such as krav maga and some jujitsu clubs, but I can't really comment on those as I've never been deeply involved with them.

Try a few - they're definitely worth going to, I've never really been to the gym but I'm probably fitter than most people I know who do just from training martial arts, plus you're learning useful skills at the same time.

id say kickboxing is the one for me

less faffin about straioht down to learnin to fight (while keepin fit)

and you will get very fit in fact the fittest you will ever be, youll burn fat and tone them arms up.

kickboxing to me is boxing + martial arts, none of the bull none of the unnecessary set paces

you will learn how to box (like a boxer), how to kick (with power) how to knee and elbow (for self defense) and you will also learn restraints and a few grapplin techniques thrown in.

All in all its something for everyone.

AFK is the place to be! Nice freindly instructors and theres no one with egos or chip on their shoulders like you find at many other clubs

Same as most other posters. Advice is to attend a few clubs. Atmosphere and training can change between clubs training the same art. Not everyone instructs in the same way and not everyone responds to the different methods of instruction in the same way. Look around, see what suits you. Theres a growing trend now to train in more than 1 art

I've ended up in a style completely different from the one I started back in 18months ago.

As to the ginger issue, have you thought about one of the Shaolin kung fu styles? That way you could either shave your head or it may blend in with the orange robes?:hihi::thumbsup:
