Harleyman
How about all the revenue the government is going to get in taxes or is the UK so flush with money these days that they dont need it?
HotPhil
So Unite negotiated for and signed-up new pay agreements then saw something shinier that someone else had and decided to bin their agreements and attempt to tarnish the reputation of the country? They were lacking in respect and integrity to begin with. Now they look foolish too.

Can you explain why it is acceptable, in your view, for companies and landlords to put up their prices because they saw something shiney (and profit from it) but it is not acceptable for people to increase the price of their labour, also profiting from it. It is simple supply and demand, they have every right to profit from the games like everyone else.

Shef_Fitness
I think personally the bus drivers need to be very careful when insisting on bonuses such as these - ie, if its busy then get paid more. Because in the current employment climate, and with the employer having the whip hand, they could quite easily argue that if its a quiet period then the bus drivers get paid less. They need to be thankfull they have a job at all these days. The only way you can truely dictate your terms and conditions is to go self employed
Kid Sampson
Would "because they signed a contract" do? Not really. I don't see why you are so quick to defend the huge bus companies who will be profiting with the extra trade and the extra work when it is the drivers who will be delivering the service. Kid Sampson
Have the bus companies put the fares up? Probably not, but they will be profiting immensly from the extra trade, all the drivers are after is a slice of that pie, when after all they are the ones who will be delivering the extra profit. The shareholders will be quids in, the directors and senior management will all receive large bonuses at the end of the year, therefore in my view those who deliver the service should receive extra too. The bus drivers are doing no more than usual, just driving a bus...if times were hard for the companies would you think it right that the drivers had a cut in pay? The ones who will be doing no more than usual are management and shareholders. Breaks, where longer than the permitted minimum, will be shortened and any down time minimised in order to lay on extra services without having to resort to too much overtime. And up and down the country over the past few years people have had pay cuts and hours reductions in order to stave off redundancies. Mrs KS had a 5% pay cut 4 years ago and a freeze since then, and she is by no means a minority. So do I think that when times are good we peasants should do well? Damn right I do.
