Fifty Shades of Grey - Don't see what all the fuss is about myself

Recommended Posts

laugh and cry?

Yes, a bit of both. The whole phenomenon bemuses me. I totally get why it has sold so many copies, it is about sex after all. What I don't understand is how anyone finds it a) remotely erotic b) swoons over the disturbing (possibly psycho) Christian Grey c) would bother to read the sequels. I maintain that it is a modern day equivalent of the fairy story and would not have had an ounce of its impact had the 'hero' been a regular Joe without all the helicopters, private jets, penthouse suites etc. Some female readers are as seduced by that as they are the sex. The bottom line is that it is mindless escapism.

As for sex toys, from recollection, aside from all the BDSM paraphernalia, not a sex toy (ie vibrator) in sight!

Anything that gets people reading and humping and buying more sex toys can only be a good thing. So what if its badly written? Most things are badly written and full of plot holes and badly drawn up characters. You can sit and pick holes in any book, film, play or radio show you like if you choose to. At least its not causing people to do negative things. The more reading and loving we have the better and if it then causes even a small percentage of the people who read it to go out and search for better reading porn then that is an even better result.

!

That is exactly what it is.

I don't see the big hoo haa about it being literary inept. It's just a bit of lighthearted fun that many enjoy, and if that gets people loving instead of hating what's the big deal???!!!

Because it makes for a good and interesting discussion, which is probably why there are 1000s and 1000s of book groups all over the country. It doesn't have to be a literary oeuvre, popular fiction is great if well written. Sloppy and repetitive writing makes it a less enjoyable read and can alientate the reader.

I read somewhere that these books hadn't been edited as they went viral prior to hard print publication. It shows.
