The slug is a hermaphrodite , it has both male and female reproductive systems , so slugs can mate with themselves when and where they wish - although it has been known for a slug to choose to make love with another slug for up to 90 minutes !

As a consequence of these activities , each slug can produce up to 36 eggs , several times a year , which is a huge number of new slugs . The eggs are laid underground and hatch within 10-21 days , and the baby slugs reach adulthood in approximately 6 weeks .

A slug has a lifespan of several years , and every year it will grow bigger and destroy more of your garden . An average garden contains approximately 200 slugs , and in a season each slug can eat up to 0.8kg ( 1 3/4 lbs) of plants .

Consequently , you could be forgiven for thinking that you are fighting a losing battle !

Regards , hope this answers your question !

They are hive-creatures. They live underground in vast pigeon-hole structures where they spend most of their lives philosophising about how they should go about expressing their thoughts without the ability to do so.

In winter they join together to produce our snow, which in previous years has been scarce due to lettuce famine.

In the summer they take part in silent and motionless celebrations and all night parties, occasionally resulting in inactive violence.

Occasionally some may brake away from the near-infinite hive and simply wander over land aimlessly.

They are no match for wasps or the platypus.

It is a pity you did not mention the Spring mating rituals where the male slugs vie for the attention of their sisters.many slugs resort to a form of breakdancing to gain some margin over their fellow suitors. As far as we know this is the only time slugs wear rudimentary clothing in the form of dessicated leaves, held together with spiders webs.
