Cyclone
When I left school constructions workers were not well paid in comparison to well educated people, over the years a shortage of construction workers had increased demand for their skills and eventually their wage exceeded the wage of the well educated, they basically priced them self out of the market This isn't an example of pricing themselves out of the market, it's an example of supply and demand. A shortage of construction workers pushed up the value of the few that there were. and cheaper labour was required which came from abroad, the solution should have been to motivate and train our unemployed instead of relying on foreign labour. That should happen naturally, if wages were so good in the construction industry then school leavers would be attracted to join that industry and the number of workers would increase which would stabilise the price. Ultimately though their wage needed to be lower, highly paid construction workers just increases the cost to build and makes housing less affordable. There wages will be whatever the market sets. LeMaquis
It was good to see, my fellow left winger, Hilary Benn (on the BBC) agree with Ed Miliband that it is not bigoted to be concerned about mass immigration. Your fellow left-winger on the BBC? Last September on a thread about Breivik you said this of the BBC "The left wing biased BBC...". Yesterday you were critcising Ed Miliband because his parents were Jewish refugees from Hitler. Are you confusing Socialism and National Socialism? And you still have not provided any evidence that “I have got in it for them”. And I ask you again. Who are "them"?
boyfriday
It was good to see, my fellow left winger, Hilary Benn (on the BBC) agree with Ed Miliband that it is not bigoted to be concerned about mass immigration. Nobody's said it is! What's bigoted is when the reasons for being concerned are irrational and based on emotional knee jerks only. There are MANY problems that immigration brings, the problem with bigots is that they're unable to see the MANY benefits associated with it as well, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be properly controlled and supervised. Mecky
The shareholders are interested in making money and for the most part have very little interest in the internal politics of the company as long as it makes money. Greed is good, as someone on here said

MrSmith
Try telling that to the highly paid construction worker. You're engaging in wishful thinking again. Any successful or highly paid worker has his/her own interests at heart, just like most of us. In order to facilitate the kind of regime your proposing there would have to be a cap on incomes..can you really see that happening? You engaging your figures before thinking again, the wages of construction workers as already fallen as a result of cheaper skilled workers coming here from abroad. I know plenty that have priced themselves out of the market, they continues to expect an high wage when Polish builder arrived here and as a result ended up with no work. That would have been the case if schools had pushed pupils to the building trades instead of universities.
mj.scuba
This article, by Ruth Edwards, (Telegraph 14 Apr 2011) is very even-handed and thought provoking. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/8451917/Who-is-to-blame-for-fractured-Britain.html So, Ed Miliband is ecohing what David Cameron said a year ago. It was good to see, my fellow left winger, Hilary Benn (on the BBC) agree with Ed Miliband that it is not bigoted to be concerned about mass immigration. The political left of this country has for years tried to stifle, halt and prevent entirely legitimate expression and discussion of immigration issues by caricaturing and de-legitimising it as racist, xenophobic, intolerant and bigoted etc, all under the wholly intolerant banner of political correctness. In essence, they became bigots, using real bigotry against our freedom of expression. The entire political elite has betrayed this country on the grandest scale by ignoring it. The whole lot of them are lower than a snakes belly, the only reason mainstream politics and politicians have it on their agenda now, is because they have realised the full extent of public opinion on the matter, and they cannot be seen to be out of step with public opinion. They will make sound bites and policy announcement, but non of the big three have fortitude to really get a grip on the issue.
