MrSmith
No the big threat to our country is the aging society, too many old people not enough young people. That’s easy to solve by employing the unemployed instead of increasing the population with immigration, all the money being spent on benefits can then be diverted to the elderly. How will employing unemployed people change our aging society? There will still be too many old people and not enough young people.

The money being given to young unemployed won't be given to them so there will be more for the older people that can no longer work, raising the pension age will also reduce the tax burden, but that already being done. If we had a shortage of young people then there would be no unemployment.
Badlittlepup
How will employing unemployed people change our aging society? There will still be too many old people and not enough young people. Right. So we have no youth unemployment? At the moment we are in a situation where we have unemployed youth but are still bringing in more and more people when there are already people here out of work. Also the argument about 'the NHS runs on immigrants'. Well yes because it's a lot cheaper to bring in someone who has had their education funded in India than go to the expensive of training and educating to a high standard someone who already lives in this country. There's no point bringing in more and more young immigrants when they are just going to result in a young person who already lives here going on the dole. Raising the retirement age is a small step but not one that'll solve the problem. Also were is the money going to come from to employ the young people? And, surely unemployment is a reflection of there being a lack of jobs?
JFKvsNixon
Right. So we have no youth unemployment? What has that got to do with our aging society?
Badlittlepup
What has that got to do with our aging society? Because there is no point saying that we need to bring in more young people to support the elderly if those young people are not working and paying taxes to support the older members of society. It adds a burden rather than alleviating it. One working young person and two elderly people being supported via taxes is more economically efficient than one working immigrant supporting two elderly people and an unemployed young person with their taxes. It's simple maths.

The problem of the aging society will not go away, it will get a lot worse unless we over come our low birthrate. Particularly as the birth rate is now beginning to increase. The financial crisis is not necessarily going to go away any time soon, we're already four years into it and it shows no sign of going away. At the present time the problem of the aging society is not going to be solved by bringing in more and more people when work does not exist for them. Even though the birthrate has gone up over the last 10 years it's nowhere near the levels needed. But this is only half the problem as we're living longer and longer, costing more and more money on heath and social care.
