Review of 2nd Promotion Season for SFFC

Recommended Posts

So the end of season 2011/12 is here and we take a quick look back at the year just gone. Forum brought in a couple of players and a few personnel changed throughout the season but the core of the squad remained.

The opening fixture with AFC Phoenix saw a 2-1 victory after an unconvincing performance but a lot of hard work saw the win through. The next 2 games saw efforts go without reward until Forum faced High Green Rovers at the end of September. The game saw Forum go 2-0 down before managing to come in at half time 2-1. A lot of hard work and commitment saw Forum defend very well indeed and eventually snatch a win as High Green lost their heads.

The win should have given Forum a boost for the following 2 games but it wasn’t to be. Again falling to defeat in the following 2 games. A late goal for Smithywood denied another league win and an even later goal for Royal Misfits saw a shock defeat in the County Cup as Forum could not find the net more than once in the game. Efforts going as close as hitting the bar but it wasn’t to be.

The following game against Graduate saw 2 new signings introduced. Ashley Matthews returned to Forum and Shaun Baugh was signed in time and put into the side. Forum ran out 5-2 winners but faced High Green the week after where 2 refereeing decisions cost Forum their 1 goal lead and eventually the game in their league cup encounter.

November got off to a terrible start as a late challenge in the Noahs Ark game resulted in Scott Fraser breaking his leg and ending his footballing days. The result was the only draw of the season as they finished 1-1. Only 1 win came in November, against Graduate, as Forum took 4 points from 12. Forum fell to a slightly harsh defeat against Titans and a heavy 4-0 defeat to leaders CosyWarm despite a decent start to the game.

December and January saw 3 wins from 5 with losses to CosyWarm and High Green but hard earned wins at Jack in a Box (5-4), AFC Phoenix (5-2) and Cadbury (2-1) saw a decent return. CosyWarm saw another player return to Forum as Kyle Dowling made his 2nd debut but Forum were short on players and had a to adapt a new formation that morning which did not work at all. Forum also lost their keeper early in the game to serious injury which did not help matters at all. The Phoenix game saw Dowling score his first goals for the club as he aimed to continue where he left off for his previous club and aimed to catch top scorer Daniel Sheedy.

More new signings came in at the end of February as cover as Dan Callow, Tom Hunter and Kane Conway all joined the squad the for run in and played a big part in the league and friendlies to follow. February and March saw Forum go on their best run with 4 wins from 4. Firstly Jack In A Box was brushed aside 6-1. Following that was Shiregreen at home which unfortunately fell on Sheffield Steel City derby day meaning many players missing. However, the side put out managed a very good 2-1 victory to keep Forum on track. March saw 3-1 wins against Totley and Noahs Ark. The Noahs game was highly charged but players very much on edge following the incident in the previous game but despite everything, Forum got the win and dedicated to Scott.

Unfortunately the following game saw Forum drop to their heaviest defeat of the season as they lost their way after going a goal up against Sheffield Titans. By now, Sheffield Forums performances had drastically improved and played an excellent passing game but this was nowhere to be seen in this game and cost them the lead before basically throwing in the towel and falling to an 8-1 loss.

Forum then faced Totley at Herdings and got back to winning ways claiming a 4-1 win leaving only Smithywood away to play. This game was put off due to weather and Smithywood with other fixtures to play so Sheffield Forum entered a 4 team mini friendly league with Hillsborough Club, Commercial and Chapeltown Prince (players for both formally of 3 Feathers).

Forum opened up against Chapeltown Prince with a 3-2 win, Liam Wales scoring an excellent goal very late in the game. The 2nd game saw an 8-4 win after going in 4-3 down at half time against Commercial. The mini league was ended 10th May as Forum faced 2nd division Hillsborough Club knowing a draw would give them top spot. Forum went a lot better than that and won the game 10-1 (some say 9-1) and got their top spot. A nice touch was added as a trophy was given to Sheffield Forum for winning the group of friendlies.

Few days later saw Forum play their final league game high on confidence against Smithywood. Forum took the lead through top scorer Daniel Sheedy but confidence was soon knocked as constant refereeing decision went against them and in the 2nd half cost them 3 goals leading to a 5-1 loss.

A disappointing end to the season as Forum were undone for a 2nd time through actions not of their own but overall, season 2011/12 was a big improvement on the previous season as the squad continued to build and improve together.

Overall, Sheffield Forum can look back on the season as a very good one as they aim to continue to improve with a few adjustments and lots of work in pre-season to avoid the mistakes made. The win percentage was better this season as were performances, even in some defeats. The performances improved through the season and the aim will be to start next as we ended this one instead of going backwards.

The players are proud of themselves this year and high in confidence for next season.

Our end of season awards were given out Friday night. For photos and details please see our Facebook page.
