On Sunday 24th June, High Riggs Nursery – part of Freeman College will be throwing open their doors and inviting you to come and have a look at what they do. As part of the national Ruskin Mill Trust Charity, Freeman College educates young people with autistic spectrum conditions and developmental delay. It opened in Sheffield in 2006 and now operates on a number of sites across the city including High Riggs in Stannington. High Riggs is a traditional plant growing nursery where the students help to grow the plants to sell, as well as learning horticulture, the students learn about traditional crafts such as green woodturning, country crafts, bow making, blacksmithing and willow work, giving them skills they can take with them when they leave the college. Being a successful business, as well as an educational centre is important for High Riggs. Profit from the nursery goes directly to the students and helps fund student activities. So come along on the 24th to help support the fantastic work they do, there will be plenty to do and see including bow making and archery, demonstrations on how to make stunning hanging basket, country crafts, blacksmithing or why not try your hand at willow weaving your own wall planter? As well as the heritage crafts there will be refreshments available too. For more information contact the nursery on 0114 285 4061 or call in to see us at High Riggs Nursery, Riggs High Road, Stannington, S6 6DA.
