Private care homes twice as likely to fail than NHS ones.

Recommended Posts

So for all those who scream and pontificate about how the private sector is leaner, more efficient and less costly than public funded care....you may well be right, but they are twice as likely to fail in their standards of care.

"The CQC found 48% of the inspected premises did not meet required standards in terms of care, welfare and whether people were safe from abuse. The commission also said independently-run facilities were twice as likely to fail as those run by the NHS, it said."

You can't trust private companies to provide social care because they are driven, first and foremost, by the profit motive.

Yeah but which one? That one which is not very good over there or that one which is not very good over here?

It said 48% not 100%. The cqc had a rating on its website for every home. There are other factors to consider. For example in Derbyshire no nursing homes are council, just residential homes who generally have less challenging residents. Price. It always boils down to that sadly. The price varies hugely so, in theory at least the more you pay the better it is.

There's been some interesting threads on here recently about this, and in practice, doesn't always turn out public=good, private=bad. There are many subtle levels. Bottom line though if you end up in a private/public/good/bad home you're ****ed anyway. Don't kid yourself the health service (private or public ) give a toss about the elderly.
